Dearborn Press & Guide

Is there anyone more important in our lives than our Mothers? I think not, but how often as the years pass do we forget the wonderful small things they did for us? For me it was breakfast. My Mother knew that I loved my eggs sunny side up, swimming in butter with perfect yolks. My poor brother Frank was the recipient of any imperfect or broken eggs. She always gave me the perfect ones. She was so considerate and so dear to me.

When it comes to gift giving for Mother's Day, consideration is the most critical aspect for me. Consideration is not charity or pity or obligation, but is a gift chosen with care and love and knowledge. To be considerate you must know what the other person likes and then magnify it. I remember my friend of years ago who gave his Mother a box of chocolates on Mother's Day that brought tears to her eyes. Unfortunately, they were tears of sadness when she said to him, "son, did you forget that I was diabetic?"

Mother's Day is a time to be considerate, to go out of your way to find something that Mom really likes. I know it's hard, brain wracking and sometimes frustrating work because it is difficult to know what she really wants. Primarily, she wants to know that you tried to please her by finding her favorite item. If she likes something simple like honey or jam, buy her the best or most exotic style you can find. Perhaps it's the world's best maple syrup, the best butter or the perfect French cheese.

Does Mom like sweet wines? How about a premium Moscato or a 20 year old Sherry from Spain? Here are a few suggestions I would do if I knew what your Mom really liked:

*Real Leatherwood honey from Tasmania, Australia. An intensely flavored honey with a luxurious sweetness.
*Stonewall Kitchen blood orange syrup. A delightful addition to pan sauces, marinades, vinaigrettes and your favorite breakfast foods.
*Thursday Cottage lemon curd. Incredible lemon dessert or jam.
*Gayle's Chocolate truffles. The absolute best truffle made right here in metro Detroit.
*Valrhona Le Noir Amer 71% cacao for dark chocolate lovers this is the best.
*Marcarini Moscato d'Asti. Light, luscious, slightly sweet effervescent wine from Italy.
*Dry Sack 15 year old Solera. This is the ultimate sherry with very ripe peach, apricot, hazelnut and vanilla aromas.
*Parrano Gouda cheese. A creamy, rich, full flavored Gouda.

Whatever the item you choose, be sure it comes with great consideration. Your Mother deserves the best.
