As the cold weather only seems to get colder and the food gets heartier, most wine lovers want to snuggle in with a full-bodies glass of red wine. Here are some “winter warmers” for you to enjoy with your pot roast, stews, and fondue by the fireside.

-The following wines were reviewed by Jason Kugel of the Dearborn store, unless otherwise specified.

Winter Warmers

1999 Marcelina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
$29.99

The fruit from this beastly Cab comes from Howell Mountain. It is characteristically full-bodied and full of black pepper spice (typical of Howell Mountain Cabernet). Don’t be afraid of this Napa monster. Blackberry, cassis, dust, and black pepper dominate this big red. Try it with black pepper encrusted lamb. A steal for $29.99!

2002 Castle Rock Zinfandel
$12.99

Good spicy fruit, nice mouth feel, and a long finish. Not too big and not too small. This medium-bodied Zinfandel will handle everything you want to serve this holiday season (except anchovies).

1999 Trinchero “Chicken Ranch” Rutherford Merlot
$19.99

This Napa Valley Merlot has a lot to offer. Rich and full-bodied with blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate notes. The tannins are soft and chewy and the finish is smooth and silky. This is serious stuff, don’t let the name fool you. Great with standing rib roast.

1999 Gallo of Sonoma Barrelli Creek Vineyard Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
$24.99

Another big, rich, and ripe cab from this consistent producer. Black currant, dark cherry, and spice dominate this Sonoma stunner. This cab is dense and rich and is perfect compliment to a grilled spice-rubbed porterhouse.

1999 Starvedog Lane Adelaide Hills Shiraz
$24.99

This beautiful Australian Shiraz comes from the even more beautiful region of Adelaide Hills. This cooler climate Shiraz has great elegance and finesse and is impeccabely balanced. Raspberry, black currants, spice, and a kiss of vanilla dazzle the palate. A great compliment to ribs, pizza, and other football fare.

2000 Chateau Bel Air Haut-Medoc Bordeaux
$17.99

A great everyday Bordeaux from the famed 2000 vintage (best since ’61) has dark cherry, cassis, and earth notes followed with firm tannins. Great now, but will also cellar well if you have the patience. Enjoy with garlic-studded leg of lamb.

2001 Anapamu Syrah
$15.99

This is a delicious little wine that boasts some of the characteristics of Syrah grown in it’s homeland, the Rhone Valley of France. You will find small-berry fruit folded into hints of vanilla, coffee, and earth. Enjoy it with any of your favorite meat or chicken dishes.
