The
2001 German Wines Are Here!!!
(The highly touted vintage, considered the best since 1976)
|
 |
2001
Bollig-Lehnert Piesporter Goldtropfchen Spatlese - $15.99
The best known city in the Mosel reaches new heights with this
release from Bollig-Lehnert. While noticeably sweet, it maintains
a good balance with fresh acidity and perfumed fruit. A great
introduction to the 2001 vintage. |
 |
2001
Studert-Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese - $17.99
From the Middle-Mosel like the wine above, this famous
vineyard site produces wines known for their lush, floral fruit
- and this one is a prime example. Rich in flavor yet light
in texture, this will work well with Asian and spicy foods. |

2001
Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Bernkasteler alte Badstube am
Doktorberg Spatlese - $24.99
And now, for the most famous Middle-Mosel of them all: from
the city of Bernkastel and the single vineyard of the Doktor,
this particular Estate owns what is considered to be one of
the best parcels within the Doktor. And their 2001 should be
awesome! We tried a simple wine from Pauly-Bergweiler (just
a Riesling QbA), and it was so good we sold out of it in about
3 or 4 days. I can't wait to try this one. |

2001
Karthauserhof Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Spatlese - $24.99
The Ruwer growing region, when at its best, produces Germany's
most delicate, subtle and refined wines. And this particular
Ruwer hails from one of the few stellar vineyard sites of the
area. With beguiling sweetness and infinite charm, this is probably
one of the better spatlesen of the vintage. |
|
|
2001
Langwerth von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Kabinett - $17.99
One of the most emulated and esteemed growers in the Rheingau,
von Simmern creates wines of legendary richness and complexity.
Although only a Kabinett, this wine should sing the praises
of the Riesling varietal and stand as a wine to drink on its
own, or with food - whichever pleases you more. |
|
|
2001
Prinz von Hessen Johannisberger Klaus Kabinett - $14.99
From the Rheingau, this Johannisberger is from
a single vineyard site, and Kabinett is the driest harvest level
in the German hierarchy. This particular Estate makes Rieslings
that typically have slightly less earthiness than other Rheingaus,
but don't lack in anything else. For a great "dry-ish"
Riesling with lots of character, this is one to try. |

2001
Seebrich Niersteiner Oelberg Eiswein, 375 ml - $25.99
Nierstein is in the Rheinhessen, probably the best known
of the Hessen growing districts, and Oelberg is a single vineyard
on the slopes north of the city. Eiswein is harvested after
a frost freezes the grapes and concentrates their juices, to
make an amazing elixir of super rich, sweet, golden dessert
wine. And the price on this one is a great value for a wine
of this caliber - a gold medal winner in the Rheinland-Pfalz
Landespraemierung (a significant honor). Quantities are limited,
but if you've never tried an Eiswein before, this would be a
great place to start. |
| Note:
All of the above wines are made from the Riesling grape, the
most noble of all of Germany's varietals, and some of them are
available only in small quantities. We just received over seventy
cases of 2001's, so please call us or stop in to search for
a particular one, or to see our completely amazing selection
of German wines. |
