17th ANNUAL ART ON THE AVENUE FAIR
COMING TO DEARBORN’S STREETS

June 7-8

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Dearborn Community Arts Council (DCAC) is hosting the city’s 17th annual Art on the Avenue Art Fair, on the streets of Dearborn’s west downtown business district on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8. The times are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Art on the Avenue Art 2003 will occupy its tradition location, with the booths of more than 120 artists lining Monroe Street and Garrison Avenue on the north side of Michigan Avenue in West Dearborn.

Many new artists will be included in this year’s fair lineup, adding new interest and variety.

New to Art on the Avenue this year is the participation of Johnny Kolakowski, who also operates a popular catering business in addition to his restaurant, the Kola Food Factory in Riverview.

Tim Briody, executive director of the DCAC, said that “we are delighted that Johnny is going to bring his special epicurian flair to Art on the Avenue. Folks are in for a treat.”

An avid hunter, Kolakowski treats his customers to a wide range of wild game dishes, and will bring his recipes for a variety of great foods to the Art on the Avenue. In the mid 1980s, Kolakowski gained attention for his creative way of dealing with a lack of muskrats, which are used to make popular dishes in the downriver area of metro Detroit. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had closed down all Michigan muskrat farms, but Kolakowski – after a lot of paperwork, time and effort – secured permission to import muskrats from Canada.

“His creativity, and the popularity of his muskrat dishes, earned him mentions on television news broadcasts across the country,” Briody explained. “Johnny has gained national fame for his muskrat dishes, which are very popular during Lent each year.”

“It’s a classic combination of quality art, music and food follows the successful tradition of Pontiac's ‘Arts, Eats and Beats’ street festival,” said Timothy M. Briody, DCAC executive director.

In addition to the art, the fair is planning to offer a children’s activity area, and open house at the Dearborn Historical Museum’s Commandant’s Quarters, a mix of live jazz, blues, folk and reggae music and a special arts and crafts show and sale in the Masonic Center, sponsored by the Rainbow Girls.

Planning is also underway for an after hours music festival focusing on the variety of new musical venues in the West Dearborn Area , and a unique and relaxing display for children and adults provided by the Florida Citrus Council.

Les Stanford Chevrolet will once again offer the fair’s Corvette Encounter, located just a short walk east of the fair area.

The major sponsors of Art on the Avenue include Dearborn Federal Savings Bank, Community Bank of Dearborn, Florida Department of Citrus Association, Little Professor Book Center, Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club of Dearborn, Art Van Furniture, Big Q Quickprint and realtor Michael Fayz.

Business or individuals interested in more information about becoming sponsors are welcome to contact the Dearborn Community Arts Council (313) 943-3095, or by emailing Briody at: tbriody@ci.dearborn.mi.us

For more information on Art on the Avenue, visit the DCAC’s official website: www.dcacarts.org
