John Lossia, one of the partners in Merchant’s Fine Wine, has been active in the business professionally since 1968. John is well versed in all aspects of the beverage industry, specializing in wines and super-premium spirits (Cognac, Single Malt Scotch, specialty Bourbon, and Grappa). “Through the years I’ve tasted thousands of beverages, with alcohol and without, and have learned several basic truths of consumption. Wine always tastes better with food, beer is always best on a hot summer day, and always drink water before you go to bed. Also, no matter what I say or do, the Chianti I sell you will not taste as good here as when you drank it with that special someone on the veranda overlooking the Tuscan countryside”.

Hi!  I'm Jason "The Wine Guy" and it would be my pleasure to help you choose the perfect wine for any occasion.  I've been at Merchant's Fine Wine since 1999 and also have approximately 15 years of food and beverage experience in the restaurant and private club industry.  I have passed the first of three exam levels offered by the Court of Master Sommeliers and was also one of 8 national winners of the 2003 AusWAT contest sponsored by Wine Australia.  I also have experience teaching wine courses at Henry Ford Community College as part of the culinary program.  I'm here to take any perceived snobbery out of wine.  Although there is certainly a lot to know about wine, never take it too seriously. It's supposed to be fun!  I love food and I obviously love wine.  I've consumed a lot of very strange things through the years and I find that being adventurous has really helped develop an educated and eager palate.  Although I'm well-rounded in wine, beverage, food, and service, I would say that my specialties lie in food/wine pairing and Aussie wines.  I love wines from every region of the world, but will also be the first to admit that sometimes things go better with beer, tequila, coffee, etc.  Please visit me at the store and try to stump me...I'm up for the challenge.  Cheers!

  • The first Oktoberfest celebration included a horse race.
